Environmental Product Declaration for E3 Gate Valves
What is an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)?
An EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) is a document that presents the results of a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) calculation. This involves calculating the emission factors specified within the standard at the relevant stages of a product's life cycle - from raw material extraction to final utilization and disposal - with the primary focus on the carbon footprint. Companies calculate the emission factors themselves using supplier data, operational data and defined scenarios for raw material sources and production sites. The declaration platform (EPD program operator) merely verifies the methodology of the calculations. It is therefore crucial that customers have confidence in the honesty of these companies. Are the results realistic? Do the sources used for the calculations (EU or Far East?) coincide with the actual ones?
You can rely on our “values”.
To ensure that the values used for the EPD calculation are realistic, we carried out a simulation involving a DN 100 E3 flanged gate valve. The results show that the production of our E3 gate valve generates 44.5 kg of CO2 per unit right up to the factory gate, whereby around 8 kg of CO2 equivalents can be saved through recycling.
It is particularly important to emphasize that our regional and eco-friendly sources of raw materials play a crucial role in reducing our carbon footprint. By way of comparison, CO2 emissions would be twice as high if we sourced our raw materials in the Far East (comparative values from the Life Cycle Analysis, known as GaBi, simulated by Daxner & Merl).
An additional example illustrates this difference: The production of 1 kg of cast iron in our Austrian EGM plant generates 1.6 kg of CO2, while production of the same material in China generates more than 3 kg of CO2. For this reason, it is important to note that an EPD value of Global Warming Potential (GWP) < 2 kg CO2-eq per kg of product most probably indicates a European origin.
"When it comes to trusting an EPD, it is important to take a very critical look. Not all EPDs are of equal value. The truth behind the claims, the premise, is what really matters."
No production in the Far East
We source 98% of all our raw materials from Europe and 2% from Turkey.
Short transportation routes
By producing in Europe, we are able to reduce CO2 emissions considerably.
Austria: 1.6 kg CO2
1 kg of cast iron for the production of E3 gate valves in Austria generates 1.6 kg of CO2.
China: > 3 kg CO2
1 kg of cast iron for the production of E3 gate valves in China generates more than 3 kg of CO2.
