Hydrants – Everything you need to know

In the case of smaller fires fire trucks are usually able to supply enough water from their tanks. For bigger fires, however, firefighters depend on external water sources. Hydrants guarantee a steady and secure water supply from underlying water networks.

How do hydrants work?

Hydrants are devices for extracting water from pipelines and water distribution systems. In the event of a fire, a hydrant can assure fast water supply. The connections to the pipes are tapped with so-called hydrant wrenches and hydrant standpipes and are further connected to the fire trucks.

What are the different types of fire hydrants?

Underground, above-ground, break away, tunnel or garden hydrant There are many different types of hydrants for various needs. Depending on the field of application and the type of water extraction, a certain type of hydrant is needed. The two largest product categories at Hawle are above-ground hydrants and underground hydrants, which are available in various designs.

Hawle Above-ground Hydrants

Above-ground hydrants are positioned at street level. The main advantage: in the event of a fire, they are easier to find and ready for operation particularly fast. Hawle hydrants are made of stainless steel and thus fit well into the urban landscape. The unique design of the old town hydrant, for instance, resembles the design at the turn of the 20thcentury and fits particularly well in historic city centres. The Hawle above-ground hydrants are available with or without predetermined breaking points (a so-called break away design) and as drop jacket hydrants, which are particularly good to be installed in outside airport areas.

Hawle Underground hydrants

Underground hydrants are submerged valves that are directly connected to the water supply line. They are marked on the surface with fire hydrant indicator plates, which indicate the exact location of each hydrant.

One can choose between height-adjustable underground hydrants and special tele-hydrants. The latter can be put into operation very quickly by pulling out an integrated standpipe – even if there is water in it. Therefore, the inside of the street cap does not need to cleaned, which allows to access the hydrant in the shortest time.

Freeflow garden hydrants, on the other hand, are mainly used in private gardens, park and recreational facilities and camping sites. Garden hydrants can be compared to water taps or garden hose connections, since the amount and pressure of the pumped water would not suffice for firefighting.

The so-called Freeflow underground hydrant differs from conventional underground hydrants. While conventional hydrants combine the operating and the medium pipes in a single cast housing, they are separate in freeflow underground hydrants. This results in much more favourable hydraulic conditions compared to hydrants with a valve plug as a shut-off device.

Are you dealing with particularly limiting space? A Hawle tunnel hydrant with two hose connections might be the right choice for your field of application.
